1 A clean start
Wash your hair as normal, but use a shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated to smooth and straighten hair. Dab with a towel to remove excess moisture, but don't wring out too vigorously as this can encourage the dreaded frizz.
2 Smooth operator
Straightening your hair is a heat-intensive process, so add some leave-in conditioner and a spray-on heat protector. Squeeze a serum or straightening balm into your hand and rub between your palms. Smooth through your hair, then comb to ensure even distribution.
3 Dry as a bone
To blowdry, divide hair into sections. Using a paddle brush and a hairdryer with nozzle attachment, start blowdrying each section, working from the back. Pick up the section at the roots and pull the brush downwards, directing the nozzle down the length of the shaft so the cuticles lie flat. Repeat through all sections and make sure hair is bone dry, as residual moisture will cause frizz. Blast with cold air to fix in place.
4 Poker straight
When your hair has been blowdried straight, heat up your straightening irons to create a salon-professional finish. As when blowdrying, clip your hair into sections. Starting from the back again, place a section of hair between the irons (as close to the root as possible), and pull down the length of the hair. Once or twice should be sufficient for a sleek, smooth finish. Repeat through all the sections.
5 Loose ends
When the hair is cool, use a finishing product such as a light serum or balm. Smooth over the surface of the hair to tame any flyaway strands.
6 Take care
If you regularly straighten your hair, remember that overusing your irons can cause heat damage, so try not to use them every day. To maintain your sleek finish, try to avoid getting your hair wet or exposing it to damp conditions, as frizz will magically appear!
