1 It's all in the wash
Wash your hair as normal, but use a shampoo and conditioner specifically designed to enhance curls and give extra hold. Carefully detangle your wet hair with a wide-tooth comb, gently towel-dry, and then blowdry until your locks are 90% dry.

2 Preparation is key
Work a small amount of volumising mousse through your hair, concentrating on the ends. Next, divide your hair into small sections and pin out of the way. The thicker your hair, the more sections you'll need to create, as large, thick sections won't curl as effectively as smaller pieces of hair, and the curls will fall out faster.

3 Roll in those ringlets
Start with a section at the back of your head and comb the hair through. Take a roller and place it underneath the section of hair, then roll the hair around it until you reach the scalp. The size of your curls will depend on the size of the rollers you use: large rollers will give loose curls, while smaller ones will give tight ringlets. Try slightly varying the size of the rollers you use to create a natural look.

4 Blowdry with caution
Work your way through the sections from the bottom up, leaving the front of your hair until last. When all your hair is rolled up, spritz it lightly with a shine spray and leave to dry naturally. If you're in a hurry you can gently blowdry your hair on a low heat setting, but be careful not to dislodge the rollers and damage the curls.

5 It's time to tousle
When your hair is completely dry, gently remove the rollers, starting with the bottom layers. Tease your fingers through each curl to loosen, but take care not to pull the curl out completely. Remember, the less you handle your curls when styling, the more staying power they'll have.

6 Curly girly
Once you've removed all the rollers, apply a little serum to your curls to keep frizz at bay. Style your hair as you like, and secure with a firm-hold hairspray so the curls don't drop. If you're aiming for a beach-tousled style, try using some salt spray to give a mussed-up, texturised look. Alternatively, for a glamorous, loose, wavy look, run a hairdryer down the length of your curls to relax them, then finish with shine spray.
