1 Wash – but don't go!
Wash your hair as normal and, if you have fine hair, add conditioner to the ends only to make sure it doesn't get weighed down. Dab with a towel to remove excess moisture, but don't wring out your hair. Add a heat protector, such as a spray or balm, and comb hair to get a nice, even spread.
2 Divide and conquer
Leave hair to air-dry for a few minutes, or use your hairdryer to remove excess moisture. Divide hair into sections with combs or clips. Section off the back and either side at the front. This will leave you with at least three sections to work with, but start with the back section.
3 Pump up the volume
Lift up one section of hair with a thickness of around four to six inches. Grab a round-barrelled brush and tuck it at the roots. Make sure you have a nozzle attachment on your hairdryer. Slowly pull through the section of hair, starting at the roots, and lift hair up to add volume. Follow the brush with the dryer right down the hair shaft, curling the ends out or under as required. When it comes to creating flicks, roll the ends around the brush like it was a curler and blast with hot air. Move the hairdryer away, hold in place for a minute to cool, then release.
4 Chill out zone
Repeat step three with all of the back section of your hair. Now work on each front side and then repeat all over. For added shine, blast the hair with cold air from your dryer, pointing the nozzle down to encourage the follicle to lie flat and reflect shine. If you have a fringe, comb into place then blast cold air towards your nose rather than directly at the hair – this will encourage the smaller section to stay in place.
5 Smoothly does it
Allow hair to cool then use a finishing product suitable for your hair type, such as a serum or balm. Place some product on your palm, rub your hands together, and lightly smooth over your style.
6 Spray and go
Fix your style with a fine mist of hairspray. For touch-ups on the go, arm yourself with the essential tools and make sure you pop a comb, a travel-sized serum and a mini hairspray in your handbag.
